She began her education at Radcliffe College. Harvard University, graduating with honors with a degree in Sociology. After taking post-baccalaureate coursework at Harvard, she attended medical school, graduating cum laude while working as a counselor at an emergency shelter for teenagers.
Dr. Ackerman was a resident at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. After completing her residency, she joined what was to become Commonwealth OB-GYN while also working part-time at the Martha Eliot Health Center as a staff physician. She has an interest in establishing long term relationships, starting in adolescence through the post-menopausal years. She specializes in wellness and general obstetrics and gynecology.
